Hi there, I have a 1996 Leyland DAF 400 series 2.5l diesel van. It weighs around 3.5T. Recently I have begun to notice the following issues with the power assisted steering:
Sometimes when I turn the steering wheel hard to right or left, there is resistance that comes and goes as I turn the wheel. When I am driving at very low speeds (e.g. crawling in traffic) the steering wheel turns very slightly left and right in a slow pulse. At higher speeds, this movement becomes a vibration that becomes a shudder between about 35 and 50mph, which then seems to level off above 50mph. The steering squeals if I turn the wheel to near full lock.
These last two problems only seem to be a major issue when I've been driving long distances. On short distance runs the steering doesn't squeal and the vibration/pulse, while still present, isn't as bad at 35-50mph as it is when I've been on the road for longer.
Can anyone give me any idea what the problem may be? The tyres are correctly inflated and the power steering fluid is at the correct level. The van also pulls very slightly to the right and I'm not certain all the tyres are wearing evenly.
Thanks for any help!
