1988 Pontiac Grand Am 2.3l Quad 4: If I put my car into gear too soon after starting it, it sets a trouble code 26 "Quad Driver Module". I recently replaced my computer because of other problems I'm still having. (no acceleration in reverse, bad gas mileage, code 13"O2 sensor", slow up hills, and poor acceleration from a stop). I recently replaced my computer, oxygen sensor, spark plugs and wires(boots). Could code 13 be being set either because there's a strait pipe where my catalytic converter was cut out from a previous owner, or from the bad leak where my exhaust pipes connect before the muffler? Could those things also affect my poor performance? I'm currently shopping for a catalytic converter and should have it on soon. I just noticed it was cut off. Thanks for your time. |

Thanks for your response, I've got some new info on it. Today while my wife was driving the car it wouldn't change gears at about 40mph, so she let off on the gas a little hoping it would shift, when she returned to push the gas it acted as if it was in neutral. After a minute it reengaged. After researching this new symptom on the internet I found this is probably a Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid, which would cause the lack of power, bad gas mileage, code 26 and stalling (I forgot to mention that when we come to stop lights it acts like it wants to stall sometimes we have to put in neutral to keep it running). So looks like this could be the problem, problem is I have no knowledge on this subject. If this sounds like it could be the correct diagnosis, could you share some insight on the TCC, anything will help. Where is the solenoid? How do I test it? How do I replace it if necessary? Where's the wiring, so I can check the ground and such? Thanks |

OK Lets start with the code 13 o2 sensor. This could defiantly be caused by the missing cat. converter or leak in the exhaust system. I think you need to start with your transmission issues and then go from there.
The Torque converter clutch solenoid is a very common problem with these transmissions and will cause your stalling issue at idle.
To replace this solenoid you have to remove the transmission side cover to access and replace the solenoid. This is not a job for the novice but it can be done in the home garage if need be. YourAutoAdvisor offers online repair manuals from ALLDATA.COM This is a great repair manual that will give you all the detailed info and pics you need to test and replace the solenoid assembly. The cost is about $13.00 so it's a great deal for the info you can access!!!
I think you need to replace the tcc solenoid , change the transmission filter and fluid and then see what problems return if any.
The code 26 is usually an internal computer problem but I see you have already replaced it so I would just deal with the trans issue first. After you have completed the repair make sure you clear the codes with a scan tool so you know for sure what codes do actually return.
keep me posted and ask any questions if you need to. |

well, that might be beyond me. But I would like to test my coil housing, coil pack, and cover with a digital voltmeter. I used to have a Haynes manual, but lost it. Do you know how to perform these tests, and what the values should read?
I remember doing these tests years back, but I had the instructions.
I think my coil housing is faulty it's discolored.
Thank you
Also, do you know anything about 89 Honda Civic 1.5liter. I've gotta get one of these cars running. Honda won't start, getting spark, and fuel. I am going to take off the timing belt cover, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I was told to check my timing. I have just replaced the coil, rotor, and cap, and it's got a new battery (also just put in a new clutch) Gets 36mpg, I'm getting like 10 with my Grand Am, the way it's running.
Thanks for your help.
Also, I was going to test some things on my Honda, since I have the Haynes book for that. I bought a digital voltmeter, it says 200, 2k, 20k, 200k, 2m, 20m on the Ohms part, but the values I need to check for are between 6 and 10, and .6 and 1.5 ohms. Before I open the meter, I wanna know if it will work, or if I need to return it for a different one???
Thank You |
